In 1977, Dick Hoyt began pushing and pulling his disabled son Rick across the finish lines of 1,100 race events, including 32 Boston Marathons. Rick and Dick completed their last Boston Marathon together in 2014. Since then, teammate Bryan Lyons has pushed Rick in the Boston Marathon.
The Hoyt Foundation, Inc. was formed in 1989, with a mission to build the self-confidence of disabled young people. The Hoyts have found and have shown through example that inclusion is a driving element in successfully achieving their mission. Since formation, the Hoyt Foundation Inc. has raised more than 2 million dollars. Each year the foundation makes donations to Easter Seals of MA, Augmentative Communication Enhancement Program at Boston Children’s Hospital, the Center of Hope, and Venture Community Services.
Throughout the years, the Hoyts have spread their unique message of determination and motivation and have instilled the “Yes, You Can” attitude in others. John Hancock has been a corporate sponsor of Team Hoyt since 2008 and is proud to support Dick and Rick’s inspirational example.
The Hoyt Foundation aspires to build the individual character, self-confidence and self-esteem of America's disabled young people through inclusion in all facets of daily life.
